The terms interior designer and interior decorator are often used interchangeably, but they refer to distinct roles with different focuses and qualifications. Here’s a breakdown of the differences:

1. Scope of Work

  • Interior Designer

    • Focuses on both the functionality and aesthetics of a space.
    • Plans structural changes like wall placement, lighting design, plumbing, or electrical layouts.
    • Works on new construction or major renovations in addition to furnishing and decorating spaces.
    • Collaborates with architects, contractors, and engineers.
  • Interior Decorator

    • Concentrates on the aesthetics and visual appeal of a space.
    • Selects furniture, fabrics, colors, and accessories to enhance the existing layout.
    • Doesn’t typically engage in structural changes or renovations.

2. Education and Qualifications

  • Interior Designer

    • Often holds a degree in interior design or a related field.
    • May require licensing or certification, depending on the region (e.g., NCIDQ certification in the U.S.).
    • Has training in building codes, safety standards, and space planning.
  • Interior Decorator

    • Usually does not require formal education or licensing.
    • Expertise is often based on style and design trends, with less emphasis on structural or technical aspects.

3. Collaboration

  • Interior Designer

    • Works with contractors and builders to ensure designs meet safety and functionality standards.
    • Can create detailed blueprints, floor plans, and 3D models.
  • Interior Decorator

    • Works primarily with homeowners or business owners to curate furnishings and décor.
    • Focuses on transforming an existing space without altering its structure.

4. Example Projects

  • Interior Designer

    • Remodeling a kitchen to improve flow and functionality, including relocating plumbing and electrical outlets.
    • Designing an office space with custom layouts and ergonomic considerations.
  • Interior Decorator

    • Choosing furniture, curtains, rugs, and artwork to refresh a living room.
    • Styling a space for a specific theme or mood without altering its layout.

While our team is primarily focused on interior design, we can also help with a wide variety of decorating needs.

Brightening up a dark living room can transform it into a welcoming and vibrant space. Here are some of the best strategies to achieve this:

1. Optimize Lighting

  • Layered Lighting: Use a mix of overhead lights, floor lamps, and table lamps to create balanced illumination.
  • LED Bulbs: Choose daylight or soft white LED bulbs for a brighter, natural glow.
  • Wall Sconces: Add sconces to brighten up dim corners without taking up floor space.
  • Accent Lighting: Highlight artwork or architectural features with spotlights or track lighting.

2. Use Light Colors

  • Paint Walls: Opt for light, neutral colors like white, cream, soft gray, or pastel tones to reflect light.
  • Ceilings: Paint the ceiling white or a slightly lighter shade than the walls to make the space feel taller and brighter.
  • Furniture and Décor: Choose light-colored upholstery, rugs, and accessories to prevent the room from feeling heavy.

3. Maximize Natural Light

  • Window Treatments: Use sheer curtains or blinds that allow sunlight to filter through.
  • Mirrors: Place mirrors opposite windows to reflect and amplify natural light.
  • Clean Windows: Make sure your windows are clean to let in the maximum amount of sunlight.

4. Add Reflective Surfaces

  • Mirrored Furniture: Choose coffee tables or side tables with mirrored or glass finishes.
  • Metallic Accents: Incorporate gold, silver, or brass finishes in décor like lamps, vases, or picture frames.
  • Glossy Paints: Use semi-gloss or satin finishes for walls or trim to reflect more light.

5. Incorporate Bright Décor

  • Throw Pillows and Blankets: Add pops of vibrant color or bold patterns.
  • Artwork: Hang bright, colorful art to draw the eye and energize the space.
  • Plants: Use greenery to add a fresh and lively element.

6. Declutter and Streamline

  • Minimal Furniture: Avoid overcrowding the space with dark, bulky furniture.
  • Smart Storage: Keep surfaces clear and use hidden storage to reduce visual clutter.

7. Flooring Choices

  • Light Rugs: Use large, light-colored area rugs to brighten up dark floors.
  • Polished Surfaces: Choose shiny or reflective finishes for hardwood or tile floors.

8. Smart Furniture Placement

  • Away from Windows: Keep heavy furniture away from windows to avoid blocking light.
  • Open Layout: Arrange furniture to create an open, airy feel.

Full Service Design Process

Decide what areas of your home you want to redesign and what you hope to achieve, we will take care of the rest.

  • In-home Consultation: At this time our designers can see the space and take into consideration the layout, lighting, existing pieces, and functionality of the space. We will discuss the aspects of the project including your vision based on your wants and needs.
  • Creating a Design: Our designers will get to work on creating a design based on the initial appointment. Pieces can include furniture, fabrics, paint color, lighting, artwork, flooring, window coverings, and accessories. It is important that these pieces contribute to how you want your home to look, feel and function.
  • Presentation of Design: Once the designers have put together a design plan, they will schedule a design presentation. This provides a visual of what the project will be. During the meeting, the overview of the project will be discussed piece by piece. Several samples will be provided so you can see and touch the product material in person. Questions will be answered and lead times discussed.
